TypedBy is a font scanner: you point your phone at type and it tells you which typeface it is, what its license allows, and which free fonts look similar. This page explains, in plain words, what happens to your data when you use the app or this website.
In short: no accounts, no ads, no tracking across apps, and we never sell your data. Photos you scan are used only to identify the type in them.
The camera
The live viewfinder on the home screen is shown only on your phone. Nothing leaves your phone until you tap Scan with camera or choose a photo.
Photos you scan
When you scan, the app crops the photo to the viewfinder, makes it smaller and sends it over an encrypted connection to the TypedBy server. The server passes it to our AI provider, Anthropic (Claude), to identify the typeface, and the answer comes straight back to your phone.
- Our server does not keep your photos.
- Anthropic does not use them to train its models, and deletes them automatically within 30 days, unless it must keep them longer by law or for a safety review.
- Please avoid scanning people or private documents; the app is meant for type.
Descriptions you type
When you describe what you are making (for example, a birthday invitation), the text is sent to Anthropic to suggest fonts. It is not stored by us and not used for training.
Font previews
To show previews in the real fonts, the app downloads font files from the public Google Fonts collection on GitHub. As with any download, GitHub receives your internet address. Links to Google Fonts or a web search open in your browser under those sites' own policies.
What stays on your phone
TypedBy does not keep a scan history. Temporary copies of the photos it processes stay in the app's cache until your phone clears them or you delete the app.
This website
- Visitor statistics: typedby.app may use Cloudflare Web Analytics to count visits. It does not use cookies and, according to Cloudflare, does not collect visitors' personal data.
- Launch list: if you sign up to hear about the launch, your email address is stored with our newsletter service, Buttondown, and used only for TypedBy and PaintedBy news. Every email has an unsubscribe link.
Who handles your data
- Anthropic identifies typefaces and suggests fonts.
- Cloudflare runs our server and the website.
- GitHub serves the font files used for previews.
- Buttondown sends the launch emails, if you sign up.
- Apple and Google handle app downloads and any purchases under their own privacy policies.
Children
TypedBy is a general-audience app and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes
If we change how TypedBy handles data, we will update this page and the date at the top.
